Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom building new data center in Taoyuan

Taiwanese telco Chunghwa is building a new data center in Taoyuan City.

In an SEC filing this month, the company said the board had approved the construction of the ‘Lunping Internet Data Center.’

Located at Taoyuan City, the new data center will be a building with one basement and five floors above ground and the floor area is about 6,277 ping (223,355 sq ft/20,750 sqm) in total.

The construction will cost approximately NT$ 1.59 billion (US$53m). Timelines of the project were not shared.

Chunghwa currently operates a number of data centers across Thailand through its HiNet unit it says totals more than 180,000 square meters (1.93 million sq ft). The company already operates the largest data center on the island; it opened the 40MW, 90,000 sqm (969,000 sq ft) Taipei data center in 2016.

The company announced plans to build a data center in the city of Taichung in 2020.

Chief Telecom, a subsidiary of Chunghwa, broke ground on its fourth data center last year. The nine-story building will span 16,500 sqm (178,000 sq ft) and is scheduled to launch by end of 2023.
