Macau set to award 5G licences

Macau’s Post and Telecommunications Bureau (CTT) has opened a tender to award licences to provide 5G mobile services. The licensing process has been delayed as the government has been implementing a major update to the Basic Telecommunications Law, with the updated legislation coming into force on 30 June

There are four licences on offer, with the four incumbent cellcos expected to come forward to claim the concessions. The regulator says that if the bidding process goes smoothly then the first commercial 5G services should be launched in the first quarter of 2023. Local operator CTM says it has had a nationwide 5G network in place since June 2021 but has been unable to offer services without the requisite licence.
