Satellite technology company Hughes Network Systems has announced a number of major deals that aim to bring connectivity to rural and hard-to-reach areas in Mexico.
Mexican service provider Stargroup, and satellite and terrestrial communication development group Aitelecom, along with satellite operator Eutelsat and mobile satellite service consortium Globalsat, have selected Hughes’ Jupiter System to power satellite connectivity at more than 7,200 sites across Mexico.
In addition, Stargroup has chosen Ka-band capacity from the Hughes Jupiter high-throughput satellite fleet for an integrated, high-performing solution.
The providers won awards under the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) Telecomunicaciones e Internet para Todos initiative aimed at bridging the digital divide. They independently selected the Hughes Jupiter System to connect community Wi-Fi and internet access sites.
Jupiter technology and capacity will help connect schools, health clinics and community centres in the most rural and hard-to-reach areas in Mexico.
The Jupiter System operates on more than 75 satellites, powering millions of consumer and enterprise broadband, cell backhaul, aero and maritime mobility connections. Now in its third generation, the system includes hubs and very small aperture terminals (VSATs) that, says Hughes, deliver the industry’s best cost-to-performance ratio; private, cloud-delivered network management; and dynamic in-route configuration for the highest possible efficiencies.
Hughes has had a busy year so far. Just some of the projects it has been involved in include working with ICT company SDT Ingenieria to connect 670 schools in Colombia, piloting a new community LTE service in five villages in Brazil and forming a joint venture with operator Bharti Airtel to provide satellite broadband services in India.
