Telenet demos DOCSIS 4.0 ahead of planned 2024 rollout

Belgian full-service telecoms provider Telenet has achieved download speeds of 8.5Gbps during a demonstration of DOCSIS 4.0 technology, Tijd reports. The company revealed it plans to begin deployment of the infrastructure from 2024, significantly increasing the current downlink of 1Gbps delivered by its DOCSIS 3.0/3.1 networks. While the DOCSIS 4.0 standard should be able to achieve theoretical down/uplink speeds of 10Gbps/6Gbps, the extent to which these are supported lies with the provider. Telenet has not disclosed details of upload speeds reached during testing.

Telenet’s HFC network passed 3.413 million households in the Flanders and Brussels regions at the end of March 2022, serving a total of 1.729 million fixed broadband subscriptions. In October 2021, meanwhile, the operator entered into a non-binding agreement with utility provider Fluvius to create what it describes as a fully open access ‘data network of the future’ in Flanders, including cable and FTTH infrastructure.
