Uzbekistan space agency and OneWeb sign LEO MoU

Hard on the heels of an agreement with Telefonica aimed at rural and remote parts of both Latin America and Europe, low earth orbit (LEO) satellite communications company OneWeb has announced another, this time involving Uzbekistan.

OneWeb and Uzbekspace, the Agency of Space Research and Technology under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the provision of ubiquitous high-speed, low-latency broadband satellite connectivity across the Republic of Uzbekistan in order to boost innovation and digitalization of its economy and society.

The partners say that the MoU paves a path for close collaboration between OneWeb and Uzbekspace in relation to market access, potential distribution of OneWeb’s satellite capacity in the country, and coordination with other state agencies and public and private sector enterprises.

Among the benefits of bringing in its high-throughput, low latency connectivity over low earth orbiting satellites, Ivan Zaitsev, Market Access Director at OneWeb, cited opportunities in e-government services, mining and green energy projects in even the most remote settlements of the country.

The MoU was signed on the side of the inaugural Central Eurasian Space Technology Conference, STC 2022, hosted by Uzbekspace.

It’s been a busy week for OneWeb. Only a few days before this deal, OneWeb and Telefonica, through its subsidiary Telefonica Global Solutions (TGS), which manages its international wholesale, global roaming, multinationals and USA businesses, signed an MoU to improve connectivity services across Europe and Latin America.
