Avantel switches off IDEN network

Colombian mobile operator Avantel – which has been majority owned by Icelandic-backed, UK-based Novator Partners since July 2020 – has confirmed that its legacy IDEN network was switched off at the end of last year. A statement posted on the telco’s homepage clarifies: ‘We reiterate that for technical reasons the IDEN network service will be turned off on 31 December 2021’.

In May 2021 sister company Partners Telecom Colombia (WOM) announced plans to stage a ‘merger by absorption’ of Avantel. The proposed tie-up was unanimously approved by WOM’s General Assembly of Shareholders on 18 May and announced two days later. Following the merger, WOM will assume all responsibilities to Avantel’s creditors and prioritise the payment of its legacy debts. The merger process has yet to conclude.
