Canadian fixed and mobile network operator Rogers Communications has budgeted CAD200 million (USD160 million) to deploy fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) to up to 314,000 homes and businesses in New Brunswick starting in the communities of Dieppe, Moncton, Riverview and Shediac. Customers will gain access to ‘100% pure fibre’ Ignite Internet-branded broadband services with symmetrical download/upload speeds up to 1.5Gbps alongside Ignite TV and Ignite SmartStream services.
Matt MacLellan, president of the group’s Atlantic Region, said: ‘It is important that we continue to invest in our communities to ensure that customers have access to faster and more reliable service than ever, especially as technology continues to evolve and the world becomes more connected.’ Rogers’ press release added: ‘Pure fibre delivers a faster, richer, and more responsive online experience that will support even more devices and services – from advanced gaming to smart home technology, to virtual support and the most demanding business operations.’
TeleGeography notes that while most of Rogers’ fixed broadband network is based on HFC cable DOCSIS 3.1 technology with fibre-to-the-curb (FTTC) architecture supporting upcoming DOCSIS 4.0 evolution, the operator is also expanding GPON-based FTTP in selected areas.
