GTD announces plans for second data centre in Peru

Chilean telecommunications company Grupo GTD, whose activities include data transmission, network interconnection, internet, mobile telephony, digital television, voice and other communication services, has announced plans to build its second data centre in Peru.

The company already has one data centre in the country. The tier III data centre opened in 2018 in the capital’s Surco district and has 202 square metres of white space and 1,161 square metres of floor space.

The new tier III data centre, in which GTD plans to invest $50 million, will be much bigger. Sited in Lima department, 30 kilometres away from its predecessor, it will have more than 6,000 square metres of floor space and 2,000 square metres of white space, with the capacity to accommodate more than 900 racks.

According to the website Data Centre Dynamics, construction of the new data centre is expected to begin in the second half of 2022.

This will not, however, be the biggest Grupo GTD data centre; that honour goes to the facility in the Chilean capital Santiago.

GTD also has a strong presence in Colombia where, late last year, it announced an investment of $20 million for the installation of a data centre in Barranquilla, a landing point for four underwater cables. This will be GTD’s second data centre in the country; it opened a data centre in Medellín in early 2016.

The new Colombian data centre, which will, it is hoped, make strong use of renewable energy, will have 6,200 square metres of floor space.

GTD so far has a network of nine data centres in Latin America, six of which are tier III certified. Seven of the data centres are in Chile.
