ClusterPower builds largest data centre in Romania

Romanian cloud service provider ClusterPower has laid out $43 million to start building a data centre campus near the southern city of Craiova.

The 273,000 sq ft campus will scale to a power output of 200MW, once all five data centres being planned come on stream, said the cloud service provider. The company will invest RON 172 mln (EUR 36 mln), of which RON 82 mln was provided under state aid granted last year by the Ministry of Finance.

The exact location of the Tier-3-designed facility is at Mischii in Dolj. The project is the first hyper-scale data centre in the region and has received around half of its initial budget from state funding as part of the Romanian government’s efforts to stimulate digital economic growth in the country.

The first of the five data centers will open its doors in the first quarter of 2022. The mtu CCHP units supply electricity, heat and cooling for the building and the infrastructure.

"All five data centers are scheduled for completion in 2025. During this time, ClusterPower plans to expand its gas-fired power plant to a total capacity of 200 MW and thus produce its own sustainable electricity," said a press release.

Rolls-Royce, along with its distributor partner Knopf & Wallisch (K&W), has supplied three mtu customized and containerized combined cooling, heat, and power plant (CCHP) trigeneration units to ClusterPower. They will be used for the efficient and sustainable energy supply at its new technology campus near the southern Romanian city of Craiova, where the IT company will open the largest data center in Romania.

The generator sets are based on mtu 20V 4000 L64 FNER gas engines, which fulfill the strictest emissions standards, allow for quick ramp-up and ramp-down, offer a wide range of load operations, and high performance also at high temperatures.
