Datagroup upgrading backbone infrastructure in Ukraine with Cisco

Ukrainian fibre infrastructure and digital services provider Datagroup has tapped Cisco to modernise its backbone network.

The project will use Routed Optical Networking and Converged SDN Transport solutions to enable higher throughput across Datagroup’s infrastructure nationwide, boosting operational efficiency by combining DWDM/IP networks and systems into a single automated infrastructure.

Demand for data has exploded in Ukraine, partially as a result of the pandemic – according to TeleGeography, Datagroup saw network traffic increase by 35% in 2020 and a further 35% across the first nine months of 2021, highlighting the need to augment its backbone network.

Datagroup CEO Mikhail Shelemba said: “As part of the first stage to modernise our network, we have a fully operational central hub in Kiev built on Cisco equipment which has already increased the resiliency of our network and significantly improved the level of service for our corporate customers. For home subscribers, access to more capacious internet channels and faster speeds is gradually becoming easier. We expect the completion of the first stage of modernisation by the end of the year.”
