Proximus steps up fiber rollout in Wallonia

Belgian full-service provider Proximus and Unifiber, the joint venture created by Proximus and Eurofiber, have announced deployment of its open access fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) network has kicked off in a further 15 municipalities in the Wallonia region.

Having already covered over 100,000 homes and businesses in the cities of Charleroi, Liege, Namur and Mons, the operator is now rolling out its network in Louviere, Chapelle-lez-Herlaimont, Seraing and Soignies, where the first inhabitants are already connected, as well as Boussu, Colfontaine, Frameries, Ath, Nivelles, Braine-Le-Comte and Tubize. For its part, Unifiber – established in July this year with the aim to connect at least 500,000 premises in Wallonia to fibre by 2028 – will cover Jodoigne, Huy, La Hulpe and Jemeppe-sur-Sambre, having already started construction in Waterloo, Morlanwelz and Saint-Ghislain.

Under its ‘Fibre for Belgium’ investment plan, Proximus aims to connect as many as 4.2 million households and companies to fibre – equivalent to 70% national fibre coverage – by the end of 2028. The operator’s FTTP network passed 621,000 premises at the end of June 2021.
