Kazakhstan’s KaR-Tel (Beeline) has launched residential GPON fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) internet access with speeds of 200Mbps-500Mbps in capital city Nur-Sultan, it announced on its website, having previously debuted GPON services for selected premises in Kyzylorda at the end of July. Beeline previously provided only fibre-to-the-building (FTTB) internet with speeds up to 100Mbps, and it highlights that the fledgling GPON service is based on a direct fibre connection all the way into the end user’s apartment. Bundles of GPON internet, digital TV and mobile subscriptions are currently available costing from KZT5,490 (USD12.80) per month.
Beeline is Kazakhstan’s largest mobile operator by subscriptions and second biggest fixed broadband provider. FTTB was launched in Almaty in October 2009 and currently covers 29 cities, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, while the operator intends to significantly expand its new GPON FTTP access network in the near future.
