Sri Lanka set for MNP following legal approval

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka has been legally cleared to launch mobile number portability (MNP).

The regulator’s director general Oshada Senanayake confirmed the news in an online press conference, adding that MNP was expected to be implemented before the end of 2021, bringing an end to the era of mobile numbers being tied to one network.

In April this year, TRCSL announced that it expected both fixed and mobile number portability to be introduced from October 2021, with Senanayake stating that this would occur “in consultation with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, due to its success in implementing number portability in Pakistan.”

TeleGeography quoted Senanayake as saying in a previous interview: “MNP is going to create a lot of empowerment. The consumer will now have the right to decide on the best service providers that he or she would prefer to be with. Telcos will now have to give their 100 percent on service delivery, which is good for the industry.”
