XL extends 4G LTE reach to Maluku and Papua

Mobile network operator XL Axiata has announced that under its ongoing 4G network rollout programme, it has deployed LTE to remote areas in the vast Maluku Islands – extending from Halmahera in the North, Central Maluku, to the Aru Islands in the South – as well as ten regencies in Papua and West Papua, in eastern Indonesia.

Deployed under the government-mandated universal services obligation (USO) initiative, XL has installed 4G base stations in remote areas that are ‘difficult to reach from the centre of government, either in the regency or province’. The USO scheme is being carried out in collaboration with the Telecommunications and Information Accessibility Agency (BAKTI) in at least 181 remote points located in the Maluku Islands, as well as in Papua. The operation of the USO BTS, which started in December 2019 and continues to expand throughout 2020, is part of the implementation of XL Axiata’s commitment to enter the age of 25 in an effort to Build a Digital Indonesia, it said.
