LPTIC announces project to extend 4G coverage to south of country

The Libyan Post, Telecommunication & Information Technology Company (LPTIC), the government holding company in charge of all state-owned telecoms, has announced work is underway on an infrastructure development programme to deploy LTE services and improve communications in the south of the country.

With the country now enjoying a period of relative peace after six years of civil war, the mobile network operators (MNOs) Libyana and Almadar Aljaded (Al Madar) and ISP Libya Telecom and Technology (LTT) are working to extend 4G services to the Wadi al-Shati, Wadi al-Ajal, Wadi al-Hayat, Owainat, Sharqiya and Qatrun districts under phase one of the programme, scheduled for completion by the end of October. Phase two will then expand coverage to areas including Qabroun.

The LPTIC has made the restoration and development of the telecoms network a priority since the beginning of the year, leading it to discuss cooperation agreements with various foreign governments and telecom groups. The company notes, however, that efforts to develop networks in remote southern areas of the country are still being hampered by the difficult security situation, equipment theft and fuel shortages.
