Denver - Internet speed testing company Ookla released its Q2 report for 2021, ranking Morocco’s top internet providers by speed, consistency, and latency.
In the fixed broadband category, Orange ranked first in internet speed, with a speed score of 19.27. This put Orange ahead of Q1 winner Maroc Telecom by over three points. Inwi arrived last in this category, representing the slowest average speed among the top three Moroccan broadband providers.
Orange came first in the latency category, with a mean latency score 13 milliseconds better than Inwi, and 14 milliseconds better than Maroc Telecom. Latency is the average amount of time it takes data to transfer from its original source to its intended destination, and lower latency times usually indicate higher quality internet services.
Maroc Telecom ranked first in consistent performance, with 32.4% of tests indicating at least 25 Mbps in download speed, and at least 3Mbps in upload speed. Orange followed with 27.3%, while Inwi ranked last with 18.3%, according to the report.
The speed test also analyzed broadband speeds by city, and determined the fastest fixed broadband internet speeds to be in Casablanca, followed by Sale, Tangier, Marrakech, and Fes.
In the mobile internet sector, Maroc Telecom dominated the competition, ranking first in speed, consistency, and latency. Inwi ranked second in each category of the mobile internet analysis, followed by Orange.
Ookla analysts also examined how different cell phone devices fared within Morocco. They established that Apple products had the best overall performances, followed by Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo devices. In terms of mobile internet speed tests, Sale ranked first for fastest download speeds, averaging 40.78 Mbps. Also featured on the list were Marrakech, Fes, Casablanca, and Tangier.
Morocco is steadily making improvements to its internet infrastructure, with plans of expanding internet accessibility and quality throughout the country.
Earlier this year, as part of their contribution to the country’s efforts to come to terms with the pandemic, all three of Morocco’s telecommunications operators decided to offer students free internet access for online schooling.
The Ministry of Education also participated in the decision, and the push was primarily intended to ensure students in rural areas equal education access during the worldwide suspension of in-person schooling.
