WOM delivering 700MHz services in 525 new locations in Colombia

Colombia’s WOM announced that it has connected its 700MHz 4G network to 525 previously unserved rural areas.

TeleGeography reports that the newcomer has spent US$50 million deploying its network, with infrastructure largely installed in the regions of Antioquia, Arauca, Bolivar, Caqueta, Cordoba, La Guajira, Norte de Santander, Putumayo and Sucre.

Chris Bannister, CEO of WOM, said: “We arrived in the country with the promise of transforming the telecommunications sector and contributing to reducing the digital divide. We have a great commitment to the disconnected of the country, that is why – at the same time that we were carrying out the deployment of our [2500MHz] commercial network – we worked to bring connectivity for the first time to these 525 locations in remote areas of the country.”

Colombia auctioned 700MHz licences in December 2019, with winners obliged to meet rural coverage quotas aimed at providing access options to the country’s indigenous population.
