Tele2 Russia launches 5G in the Kazan Metro

The mobile operator Tele2, together with Nokia, launched a 5G test zone in the Kazan Metro, which thus became the first fifth-generation network in the Russian metro.

5G services are available in all metro stations, with peak broadband speeds up to 3.8 Gbps. Customers can connect to the network either directly, or over Wi-Fi hotspots.

The 5G pilot zone in the Kazan Metro will operate until the end of 2021, said the operator.

The network is available for Tele2 subscribers, for whom Tatarstan is their home region, with smartphones supporting 5G. Instead of the LTE network, they will automatically register with the 5G network.

Subscribers of other operators and owners of other devices can connect to 5G via Wi-Fi routers at the Kremlin station - on the platform, but also at the entrance lobbies. To connect, you need to select the Tele2WiFi5G network in the Wi-Fi access settings, the operator informed.

The company added that throughout the entire operation of the test network, Tele2 and Nokia plan to test several new services based on 5G - to ensure the security of a transport facility, monitor the epidemiological situation and entertainment services based on augmented and virtual reality (AR / VR ) to Kazan residents.

According to Aleksey Telkov, Deputy General Director for Technical Infrastructure at Tele2, the metro is an ideal environment for testing the technology on real subscriber devices, also because 5G underground research does not interfere with other networks.
