Brazilian 5G auction expected to take place in July

Brazil’s Minister of Communications Fabio Faria has indicated that the country’s long-awaited 5G auction will take place next month. According to Reuters, the official does not expect the ongoing analysis of the auction’s rules by the Federal Court of Accounts (Tribunal de Contas da Uniao, TCU) to delay the auction process. Faria reaffirmed that he expects all state capitals to have 5G Standalone (SA) networks up and running by July 2022.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, on 25 February this year the National Telecommunications Agency (Agencia Nacional de Telecomunicacoes, Anatel) approved certain 5G-related rules – a full year after the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications (Ministerio da Ciencia, Tecnologia, Inovacoes e Comunicacoes, MCTIC) provided its own approval of the 5G auction process. The delayed spectrum sale will include frequencies in the 700MHz, 2.3GHz and 3.5GHz bands, as well 26GHz millimetre wave (mmWave) spectrum.
