IPTV dominates in France

IPTV accounted for 60.5% of TV reception in France in the fourth quarter of 2020.

This, according to data produced by the regulator CSA and published by Satellifax, was 2.1pp higher than a year earlier, with fibre’s share at 25%, up 5.4pp.

Meanwhile, DTT’s share fell by 1.3pp.to 47.4%, having increased in 2019. If the reception of FTA DTT channels via cable is included, the figure increased by 52.5%. Satellite’s share continued its long-term decline, and as of Q4 FTA services, competing with DTT, were received by 11.2% of households.

In Q4 just over two-thirds (67.6%), or 1pp more than a year earlier, used a single reception method. IPTV saw the strongest growth (3.5pp), with DTH and DTT losing 1.6pp and 0.9pp respectively.

DTT was the sole reception mode for 21% of TV households, while 30.1% used two or more reception modes, with the most popular combination being DTT and IPTV (19.9% of TV households).

As of the end of 2020 81% of TV households had a set connected to the internet (+2pp). Most were connected via the ISP’s TV decoder (81%), but smart TVs (+4pp) and OTT boxes (+3pp) showed strong growth. Close to half (45%) of smart TVs were equipped for HbbTV.
