Africell expands Gambian network despite pandemic

Group Communications Director for Africell, Sam Williams, claimed that Africell Gambia has recently implemented ‘its biggest network footprint expansion in 15 years’ despite the pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as a major fire that destroyed one of its biggest warehouses, reports The Point newspaper.

Speaking at the firm’s Gambian head office during an interview with group executives visiting from the UK headquarters, Williams declared that ‘Africell is going from strength to strength’, while Africell Gambia CEO Hussein Diab Ghanem added that the cellco’s operations had a direct positive impact on local people while the operator was committed to pushing the country’s economy forward and was ‘ready to innovate’. The executives highlighted new ‘smart’ rural cell sites using advanced solar-powered technology, giving remote communities access to telecoms services ‘without creating a negative environmental footprint’. Africell Gambia boasts 93% territorial coverage and continues to lead the local cellular market with ‘over 1.6 million subscribers’, according to its management.
