KPN expands FTTH network by 107,000 premises in Q1

Dutch quadruple-play telco KPN reported on its website that it added 106,657 additional premises to its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband access network footprint in the first quarter of 2021, and it expects to achieve a target of 500,000 new FTTH homes passed in the full-year. It also anticipates that nearly half of all homes in the 25 largest Dutch cities will be able to connect to its FTTH network by year-end.

TeleGeography notes that KPN’s FTTH network covered 2.89 million premises at the start of April 2021, up from 2.78 million at end-2020 and 2.47 million at end-2019, representing a national household coverage percentage of over 36%. Partly via a recently-announced fibre acceleration programme in collaboration with pension fund ABP, KPN is aiming to cover approximately 80% of households in the Netherlands with FTTH by end-2026.

KPN also announced this week the launch of the ‘Premium Wi-Fi’ service for businesses – a fully managed solution comprising high-end Wi-Fi mesh access points from Cisco Meraki, a cloud-based online management portal and advanced security. Each Wi-Fi network is custom installed and managed remotely for KPN’s B2B clients.
