Algerian cellcos to gain 2300MHz spectrum for improving mobile internet

Algeria’s three cellcos Mobilis, Djezzy and Ooredoo will receive new frequencies in the 2300MHz spectrum band for the first time as part of initiatives to improve data speeds and quality of mobile broadband internet access, it has been announced by Minister of Post & Telecommunications Brahim Boumzar, as reported by Agence Ecofin.

The move was decided at a meeting to assess the implementation of national telecoms sector plans’ mobile network components for the first quarter of 2021. Boumzar stated: ‘I have made a commitment with the three mobile telephone operators in order to allocate them from 20 to 30 megahertz equitably on the 2300MHz frequency band which is considered to be the most privileged,’ adding that his ministry was ready ‘to negotiate with stakeholders to free up other frequency spectra and make them available to mobile operators, on condition that they undertake to invest more and deploy these spectra as soon as possible in order to offer a better quality of service and a better speed.’
