Telecommunications declared as emergency service in Bangladesh

The government has declared the telecoms services and all organizations associated with it as an emergency service.

The announcement came in a statement by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), which was sent to top executives of telecom companies.

It said the move came in a bid to keep telecommunication networks and services operational during the lockdown to curb Covid-19 transmission.

Bangladesh recorded more than 7,000 cases in daily figures for the first time on Sunday, with the country gearing up to enter a week-long lockdown from Monday.

All kinds of public transports, including road transport, trains, water transports and domestic flights will remain suspended.

The ban will not be applicable to emergency services, cargo transports and production systems, according to a gazette notification issued on Sunday.

The BTRC has asked telecom companies to cooperate with the authorities over operating its vehicles.

The directive has been sent to all mobile phone operators, ISPs, IPTSPs, NTTN operators, tower sharing operators, call centers, IGW, IIG, ICX, Nix, ITC and Tivas operators in the country.
