Globe to replace infra in Visayas, Mindanao cities with 4G LTE

Globe Telecom said it plans to replace its old 3G equipment with 5G-ready 4G LTE infrastructure in several cities in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Globe will upgrade infrastructure in Bacolod City, Cebu City, Mandaue City, and Lapu-Lapu City in the Visayas, as well as Davao City and Cagayan de Oro City in Mindanao.

The telco promised that the more advanced technology would lead to better connectivity.

"Boosted by the positive feedback we received from customers who noted significant improvements in their call, SMS, and data services after the site upgrades, we are upgrading more areas with the newest available technology that will respond to their needs better," said Joel Agustin, Globe senior vice president for program development.

The telco is expected to fast-track its shift to 4G LTE in 2021 as the standard of mobile internet in the country.

Third-generation or 3G technology has been around for two decades. Mobile internet technology has been upgraded since then, with the introduction of 4G LTE or Long Term Evolution and 5G, though the latter has yet to be fully rolled out in the Philippines.

Globe has already upgraded its network into 5G-ready 4G LTE in 199 cities and towns in Metro Manila, Rizal, Quezon, Albay, Oriental Mindoro, Leyte, and Agusan del Sur, among others.

In October 2020, Globe completed the removal of 3G SIM cards from its distribution chains. The company reiterated its call for customers to change their SIMs and upgrade their devices to 4G LTE to experience better connectivity. – Rappler.com
