Russian mobile heavyweight MegaFon has announced that it is investing RUB6 billion (USD75 million) in a venture to develop a satellite data transmission system under the ‘MegaFon 1440’ name.
The new unit, a 100% MegaFon subsidiary being launched this month, will undertake R&D into low-orbit satellites to provide cost-effective high speed (50Mbps-1Gbps) data services. Initial satellite launches under the project are envisaged in five years.
