Telecom Egypt unveils Egypt's largest data centre plan

Telecom Egypt announced plans to construct Egypt’s largest international data centre, in a move to fortify its standing in the country as the largest subsea cables operator in the region.

In a statement, the operator announced the new data centre will be commissioned in early 2021 and will be situated in Cairo’s technology hub Smart Village. Telecom Egypt already has six data centres across the country.

The data centre will have access to all global submarine cable systems in Egypt and all 10 Mediterranean and Red sea subsea landing stations, giving it access to more than 60 countries around the globe.

The operator said the data centre will have enhanced colocations services and higher levels of redundancy, a measure of back up equipment a data centre has to kick in when primary equipment or infrastructure fails. The facility will host up to 2,000 racks over a 4 Colo Modular Facilities Campus.

The Covid-19 pandemic did not affect construction plans for the data centre, noted Telecom Egypt, “and is moving according to plan”.

The company said in a statement: “This certification demonstrates Telecom Egypt’s clear focus and commitment to transform Egypt into a global digital hub. The new data centre is situated in Smart Village in west Cairo in which many multinational and local companies, governmental entities, financial authorities, educational institutions, and research & development centres are located.

“This project coincides with the country's efforts to expedite the development of Egypt's ICT infrastructure and digital services as well as contribute to the regional digital transformation.”
