SK Telecom to collaborate on 5G-powered smart port

SK Telecom said it has signed agreements with partner institutions to collaborate on a 5G-powered smart port pilot project that aims to optimize distribution via the internet of things (IoT).

The agreement stated that participating institutions will contribute to building a pilot for a 5G-powered smart port and building technology for port optimization and safety. It will also develop a port software industry in affiliation with local small- and medium-sized businesses and start-ups.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Busan Port Terminal, Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering and the Intelligent Port Technology Logistics (IPTL) under Pusan National University.

Going forward, SK Telecom will collaborate with the Oceans Ministry to provide a communications module for 5G network infrastructure and a trial version, push forward with strategies for 5G smart ports and sponsor the port logistics system powered by 5G.

SK Telecom said the successful completion of the smart port will lead to a stronger competitive edge via a stable port service backed by a speedy and automated system, while cutting down on costs. The company added that the process will create more jobs and a new market for related industries.
