Sri Lanka mobile network Dialog adopts QR code payments

Mobile operator Dialog Axiata said it had adopted Sri Lanka’s national quick response code (QR) which will enable payments at over 50,000 merchants around the country.

The LankaQR standard was developed by Lanka Clear, Sri Lanka’s national payments, and cheque clearing company.

It will “enable any LANKAQR enabled payment app users to purchase goods and services through Dialog merchants accepting LANKAQR payments at no transaction cost with instant payment notifications,” Dialog said.

Dialog said it will bring in over 50,000 Dialog merchant without a set up cost, who will have lower transaction costs and instant notification receipts.

Dialog’s eZ Cash branded mobile wallet customers would also be able to made payments with LankaQR, using any bank account, or Visa and Mastercard debt and credit cards, the firm said.

Dialog said it launched LankaQR at an event the central hill town of Matale on September 12, at the regional central bank office in the presence of Central Bank Governor W D Lakshman.

The firm said it will provide 3GB mobile data free-of-charge to Dialog customers within a five kilometre radius of Matale town to help them register for eZCash and download the app.

eZ Cash, operates under the license from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), and was set up under the Payments and Settlements Act No 28 of 2005, to send and receive money.
