Claro launches 700MHz 4G in Colombia

Claro Colombia (America Movil) has started deploying an LTE network on the 700MHz band and launched its first 5G pilots in the capital Bogota. In a statement, the company said a total of 30 base stations connected to 700MHz spectrum have already been activated in Eastern Bogota and Ciudad Salitre, with the new network reaching Bucaramanga, Medellin, Cali, Rionegro and Barranquilla, Cartagena, Villavicencio in the next few days.

The operator acquired 30MHz in the 2.5GHz band and 20MHz in the 700MHz band in December’s auction and activated mobile services over the 2.5GHz band in around 800 localities in May. “The company maintains its investment commitment to comply with the deployment of this technology throughout the national territory,” said Claro Colombia CEO Carlos Zenteno, adding that the prime beneficiaries of the 700MHz rollout will be the company’s customers via an improved experience, better service as well as increased capacity and coverage.

Claro Colombia has also begun testing 5G technology a few weeks after the government granteda block of 3.5GHz spectrum for non-commercial trials in June. According to local daily Vanguardia, Claro conducted a 5G pilot at the Plaza mall in Bogota, reaching download speeds of 864Mbps and upload speeds of 103Mbps, with more tests to be carried out in Medellin, Cali and Barrancabermeja.
