Huawei launches Huawei Pay mobile services in Singapore

Chinese tech giant, Huawei, has launched its Huawei Pay mobile payment service in Singapore, in association with UnionPay.

UnionPay is China’s biggest bank card clearing service, with a sizable reach across Asia, the partnership will give Huawei Pay huge access to a large number of businesses in Singapore, including supermarket chains and local taxi services.

A report in the South China Morning Post suggests that over 90 per cent of ATMs in Singapore already support UnionPay cards, and their payment cards are widely accepted at a swathe of businesses across the island of Singapore.

Particularly during the current Covid 19 pandemic, mobile payment platforms are becoming increasingly important as they allow people to make payments remotely and practice social distancing while doing so.

“During the special period amid the novel coronavirus outbreak, the launch of Huawei Pay services via UnionPay mobile payment has provided Singapore residents with safe and secure payment options to help them better prevent the pandemic,” UnionPay told journalists from the South China Morning Post.

Huawei will enter an already congested mobile payment market in Singapore, with local providers such as FavePay, GrabPay and Paynow already well established players.

Huawei launched Huawei Pay services with Union Pay in mainland China in 2016 and quickly expanded into overseas markets, including Russia and Pakistan.
