Telma completes nationwide LTE-A upgrade

Madagascan operator Telecom Malagasy (Telma) has completed an upgrade to its LTE network allowing it to deliver 4G+ (LTE-A) across the country.

With this upgrade, the operator – which is the largest in Madagascar – claims it is able to double typical 4G data rates. Telma began implementing the upgrade in October last year.

Telma’s CEO Patrick Pisal-Hamida said: “We are continuing to invest to offer our customers the best internet in Africa (and among the best in the world), thus helping to reduce the digital divide for all Madagascans and in line with objective No. 22 of the ‘Initiative for the Emergence of Madagascar’ aimed at modernising Madagascar’s telecoms infrastructure.”

In July 2019, Telma signed a network upgrade agreement worth almost US$100 million that would see Ericsson build out and optimise its core network and RAN over the next four years.
