NTT Docomo prepares for Japanese 5G launch in March

NTT Docomo has announced that it will launch its 5G network in Japan on the 25th March 2020.

NTT Docomo’s next generation mobile network will offer initial maximum download speeds of 3.4Gbps, rising to 4.1Gbps in June.

The network will initially be available in 150 locations throughout the country and will then scale out to reach all Japanese Prefectures by June 2020. The company hopes to reach 500 towns and cities across the country by March 2021.

“At launch, DOCOMO's lineup of 5G-compatible devices will include seven models in the docomo Smartphone series and a mobile Wi-Fi® router. All models will be compatible with DOCOMO's existing LTE network.

“Going forward, DOCOMO is committed to steadily expanding and enhancing its 5G network service to create new value for society and to make customers' lives more convenient and fulfilling,” an NTT Docomo spokesman said in a release to the press.

NTT Docomo will charge a premium for its 5G services, with a monthly plan including 100GB of data costing around $51. It will also offer a range of cheaper plans that come with either 1Gb, 3Gb, 5Gb or 7Gb of data.

NTT Docomo remains Japan’s biggest mobile network operator, with more than 75 million subscribers to date.
