Verizon to offer Disney+ free of charge

As the big direct-to-consumer switch on dates approach, and throwing a huge gauntlet down in a market where mobile access will be crucial, Disney+ has inked an exclusive wireless carrier partnership with US comms giant Verizon

From Disney+’s 12 November launch, Verizon will begin offering twelve-month free access to the eagerly-anticipated service to all new and existing 4G LTE and 5G unlimited wireless customers, and new customers of its Fios Home Internet cable service and 5G Home Internet package.

Disney+ will be the dedicated streaming home for movies and shows from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and other parts of the massive Disney TV and film library. The offer also includes never-before-seen original programming including feature-length films, series, documentaries, and short-form content made exclusively for Disney+. In its first year alone, Disney+ has committed to releasing more than 25 original series and ten original films and documentaries.

The House of Mouse has also reached global agreements with nearly all the major platforms to distribute the Disney+ app across partner mobile and connected TV devices, including Apple, Google, Microsoft, Roku and Sony. In August 2019 it also announced a distribution agreement with Charter Communications.

“Giving Verizon customers an unprecedented offer and access to Disney+ on the platform of their choice is yet another example of our commitment to provide the best premium content available through key partnerships on behalf of our customers,” commented Verizon chairman and CEO Hans Vestberg.

“The launch of Disney+ kicks off a new era of streaming for The Walt Disney Company, bringing nearly a century’s worth of content from our iconic studios to consumers directly,” added The Walt Disney Company’s chairman, direct-to-consumer and international Kevin Mayer. “We’re excited to share this moment with Verizon and bring Disney+ to the millions of customers across its award-winning wireless network.”
