Telkomsel builds out 22,000 new 4G BTS

Indonesian mobile operator Telkomsel (Telekomunikasi Selular) deployed 22,000 new 4G LTE base transceiver stations in its national network between January and September 2019, including boosting coverage in a number of ‘disadvantaged, frontier and outermost’ or so-called ‘3T’ regions.

The cellco, 65%-owned by state controlled fixed line operator Telkom Indonesia, had set a goal to roll out 20,000 new 4G-enabled BTS in the first nine months of this year, but according to its Vice President of Corporate Communications Denny Abidin, beat its own target which will help its plans to enable the development of NB-IoT technology, VoLTE and carrier aggregation (CA) in the network.

Further, Denny confirmed that its network enhancement programme is focusing on the deployment of LTE at 900MHz as part of long-term plans to expand 4G services to 95% of the population in cities/districts across Indonesia. ‘Going forward, Telkomsel will continue to drive the development of technology in Indonesia by introducing innovative digital products and services such as MAXstrean video service applications, Sky Music and the World of Games,’ Denny concluded.
