Orange and Global Fund tie up to tackle disease in Africa

Orange and the Global Fund have signed a partnership to develop e-health services to reduce the prevalence of AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in Africa. Using Orange mobile technology, the partnership will improve the quality of and access to medical treatment via a digital platform that strengthens the link between healthcare professionals and patients.

The two parties said a digital platform for healthcare professionals will be set up by the end of December in association with the Ministry of Health in Morocco, the first country to benefit from the partnership. This will monitor patients with HIV and tuberculosis. Adherence to treatment is vital to prevent the spread of these diseases and resistance to medication.

The partnership will be extended in 2020 to other countries including Cote d'Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burkina Faso. The digital services developed by Orange can be applied to other e-health fields, too, including medicines inventory keeping, prevention, and data collection.

In a joint investment of USD 5 million with the Global Fund over the next three years, Orange will make a contribution in kind worth USD 2.5 million. Other activities could include drones to deliver medication and medical analyses to remote clinics that are difficult to access.
