GTT launches LTE service

Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GTT) has launched commercial 4G LTE services in selected areas, and is offering customers with compatible handsets a free upgrade to 4G. The Ministry of Public Telecommunications (MoPT) announced that the service has been available to users in the following areas: Georgetown, Great Diamond, Lusignan, Rosignol, Blairmont and New Amsterdam. Commenting on the launch, Minister of Public Telecommunications Catherin Hughes applauded the move and highlighted the importance of connectivity and the availability of high speed data services for the government’s ‘Decade of Development’ economic growth programme. The official went on to advocate for unserved areas to be covered ‘in the shortest possible time’. GTT CEO Justin Need, meanwhile, was cited as saying that it would roll out LTE services to more areas of the country once it had spectrum to do so. The cellco did not provide any further information, however, and did not clarify which spectrum bands the new service used.

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that GTT had previously announced in Q1 2017 that an LTE-based service was available in areas of the Essequibo coast, but the company did not make any subsequent announcements on the matter and LTE services were not listed on its website until recently.
