UAE harnesses AI to achieve sustainable development

The UAE has succeeded in adopting a sustainable strategy for Artificial Intelligence (AI), through digital technology and youth over the past two decades and has begun early planning to transform to smart and green cities that achieve sustainable development for future generations.

The UAE believes that AI is the key pillar on which service sectors and infrastructure will depend as it is an integral part of ordinary lives in the coming decade as the economic sectors seek to shift towards sustainable development and building a knowledge-based economy.

In this report, the Emirates News Agency, WAM, sheds light on the focus of the Future Summit, one of the main events of the World Future Energy Summit within the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, ADSW, on AI in dealing with climate change in innovative ways and developing sustainable and secure urban centres through new and eco-friendly technologies.

Within the next decade, AI will become an integral part of ordinary lives, as economic sectors are transformed, climate change tackled in innovative ways, and sustainable, resource-secure urban centres developed through revolutionary “green” technology. That will be the message at the Future Summit, the signature conference of the World Future Energy Summit (WFES), during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), from Jan.12 to Jan.19, 2019.

This radical vision is the key takeaway from a landmark new report entitled “Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for the Earth” at the World Economic Forum, WEF.

The report claims that with AI having reached a historic turning point in terms of sustainability applications, one will see rapid advances in big data, hardware, complex algorithms, and the increasing accessibility of these tools for both industry and start-ups.

The key to this change was an awareness of the business value of AI across technologies as diverse as autonomous vehicles, AVs, distributed energy grids, smart agriculture and food systems, next-generation weather and climate prediction, smart disaster response, AI-designed ‘smart’ cities, a digital Earth “dashboard,” and reinforcement learning for Earth sciences innovations.
