Ooredoo's 4G network 'fastest' in Myanmar

Ooredoo’s mobile network in Myanmar has been found to be the fastest in the country, according to tests carried out by network testing firm Ookla.

Between January and June 2018, speed-test users initiated 149,413 tests on 4G-avaliable devices across Myanmar. Results from 282 localities found that Ooredoo offered the fastest download speeds on 4G devices, with an average of 38.2Mbps for downloads and 20.65Mbps for uploads.

Ooredoo was one of the first entrants into the Myanmar market when it opened up in 2013, and was the first to launch LTE services in the country. It has rolled out 4G Plus in more than 244 townships and is aiming to extend this to 300 by October.

Vikram Sinha, Ooredoo Myanmar Chief Executive Officer, said, "Our investments in the network continue to help us to make the fastest available speeds a daily reality for people in Myanmar. This achievement validates our efforts to deliver the best possible experience for our customers.

"We’re always working to be at the cutting-edge of both technology and innovation, focusing on improving our customers’ satisfaction. Our goal is to help enrich the digital lives of Myanmar’s people bringing them innovative products with relevant, shareable content and a superior data experience which helps them to enjoy the internet even more every day."

16 million people have access to the LTE network in Myanmar. The country awarded its fourth and final telecoms license in January, with a joint venture between Vietnam’s telecom company Viettel and two local firms set to compete with Ooredoo, Telenor, and state-owned Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications (MPT).

The country has 52 million mobile connections, according to GSMA Intelligence figures, meaning a SIM penetration of 97%. The number of connections is up 9% year-on-year.
