Togo gets second 4G launch in a week

Moov Togo, which is majority-owned by Morocco’s Maroc Telecom, has announced the commercial launch of 4G LTE mobile services in and around the capital Lome, in the same week that rival Togo Cellulaire (Togocel) announced its own 4G launch. Moov confirmed the official launch just days after it said a number of VIPsubscribers were invited to test mobile internet services such as video streaming and TV broadcasts on its new LTE network on 28 June 2018. The mobile operator noted that the LTE launch was made possible by the decision from the Authority of Posts & Telecommunications Regulation (ART&P) in Togo to issue 4G mobile licences to Togocel and Moov Togo on 11 June this year, allowing them to offer faster mobile internet (and also kick start the availability of financial services within the framework of the 2018 Finance Act). Previously, in October 2016 the Minister of Posts & Digital Economy began official talks with Togocel and Moov concerning the award of 4G licences with the aims of driving down prices, improving service quality and boosting the availability of broadband internet on the national level.

Commenting on the launch, Moov Togo general manager Abdellah Tabhiret said: ‘With the advent of 4G, today, new prospects are opening up that will [give confidence to our] subscribers and confirm our commitment to remain a company concerned with revolutionising mobile telephony [in Togo]’.
