Sony Pictures expands into Dutch OTT

Sony Pictures Television Network (SPTN) is expanding into OTT in Western Europe for the first time by launching Film1 as a direct-to-consumer subscription service in the Netherlands.

Film1’s OTT service will make its debut this Thursday (June 21) on PC, Mac, IOS and Android and be available to new customers who sign up to a monthly subscription of €7.99 or an annual one of €79.99. It is set up to compete with the two major OTT film and series OTT platforms in the country, Netflix and Videoland by RTL.

The new service will have a live stream of the Film1 Premiere linear channel and a range of over 300 movies on demand including the latest films of major film studios.

Commenting on the launch, Kate Marsh, SPTN’s executive VP, Western Europe, International Networks, said: “We’re delighted to be expanding into OTT with the launch of our new Film1 service. We take pride in securing the latest and best film content for our Dutch audience, and this new direct to your screen service complements our partnerships with pay-TV operators and delivers a new way for people to access our top-quality content.”

With the monthly or yearly subscription through Film1, films can be streamed online, via Film1 app, Film1 site, Android tv, Chromecast, AirPlay and PlayStation. With a subscription through a TV operator and a set-top box, there is access to the four linear film channels as well.

Although the current press release by Sony claims that Film1 is only now available OTT, the movie channel already announced in October 2016 that it was to be available on Playstation 4 devices.
