ice taps Nokia for LTE expansion

Norwegian mobile operator ice has confirmed that it has enlisted Nokia to facilitate its network build-out. Under the terms of the agreement, Nokia will deploy its AirScale Radio Access technology to optimise LTE performance and provide improved coverage and capacity to the cellco’s subscribers, as well as paving the way for a future transition to 5G. Eivind Helgaker, managing director of ice, noted: ‘An expanded and improved network will enable a larger proportion of on-net traffic through our own network. This will benefit both our investors and customers.’

The development follows on from last month’s news that ice had entered into a new and improved national roaming agreement (NRA) with Telia. The new NRA is valid for two years, with an additional and conditional right to prolong the NRA by a further year. The new NRA replaced the three-year agreement that the two parties signed in February 2015.

On 23 May ice announced that it had passed the 500,000 subscriber milestone, which it said confirmed its challenger position within the Norwegian market. The cellco currently provides 80% population coverage via its independent 4G network, while the rest of the population is served by the aforementioned NRA.
