BTC completes first stage of broadband upgrade

Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC) says it has completed the first phase of its ‘Bokamoso’ project, under which it is upgrading and expanding its fixed broadband networks. The BWP90 million (USD9 million) scheme, which was first announced in November 2017, is expected to run for twelve months and is designed to improve internet connectivity in the country’s main cities. The first phase covered parts of Gaborone and Francistown, the Weekend Post reports. Phase two will continue work in Gaborone and also extend connectivity to other parts of the country. The upgrade is being carried out in cooperation with South Korean telco KT Corp.

BTC’s managing director, Anthony Masunga, says that he hopes the project will also lead to lower prices for broadband users: ‘Prices will ultimately come down as we build volume and uptake. We are going to negotiate with our broadband provider, Botswana Fibre Networks (BoFiNet), to see how we can accommodate such a development.’
