VELCOM switches on VoWiFi in Belarus

Belarusian fixed broadband and mobile operator VELCOM (formerly Mobile Digital Communications) is claiming a country first, with the announcement that it will launch Voice-over-Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) technology from 13 April 2018, allowing subscribers to make and receive calls via Wi-Fi. The operator says that VoWiFi calls will improve coverage by using a base station as a Wi-Fi router to support the call. To make Wi-Fi calls, subscribers will need a smartphone that supports this technology, such as the Huawei P10, ZTE A6, Huawei P20 and P20 lite. In future, the list of supported devices will expand. VELCOM says the new service will offer end users ultra-high (HD Voice) quality calls.
