Telefonica set to unify brands in Argentina

Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica is set to unify its operations in Argentina under the Movistar brand from 3 April, it has been revealed. The telco currently operates as Telefonica de Argentina (TdA) in the wireline sector and Speedy in the broadband market, and only uses Movistar for its mobile activities. It has been suggested that the rebranding exercise will help the telco to reposition itself as a multi-play operator ahead of its planned pay-TV launch.

Back in July 2008 the Supreme Court upheld a ban on telcos offering pay-TV services, sparking a dispute which rumbled for almost ten years. Finally, in January 2018 the National Entity for Communications (Ente Nacional de Comunicaciones, ENACOM) authorised the telco to enter the country’s pay-TV sector, via the award of a ‘Registro de Cable’ (Cable Registration) licence covering Buenos Aires, Godoy Cruz, Guaymayen, Lujan de Cuyo and Mendoza.
