Three new operators enter broadband market in Senegal

Senegal’s telecom regulator ARTP announced the official launch of commercial activities for Africa Access, Arc Informatique and Waw. The three companies secured 10-year broadband licences at the end of 2016 and were each granted LTE spectrum to deploy their own network in selected areas of the country. The licences include specific obligations detailing regional coverage targets over a five-year period.

The new operators have each been allocated five geographical areas, with all three covering locations in the Dakar region. For Waw, the remaining four regions are Thies, Diourbel, Tambacounda and Kedougou, and the company has already committed to install 200 LTE masts in the current year, offering an average speed of 20 Mbps.

An ISP since since 1996, Arc Informatique will need to meet coverage targets in the regions of Louga, Saint-Louis, Fatick, Kaolack and Kaffrine, while Africa Access’s footprint will cover areas in Ziguinchor, Sedhiou, Kolda and Matam, in addition to the Dakar region.
