Cuba to extend broadband access to 52,000 homes this year

A total of 27,316 customers have signed up to a home broadband internet connection from Cuba’s state-owned telecoms operator Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba (ETECSA) since the service was launched in March last year.

Local news source Granma quotes the operator’s director Mayra Arevich as saying that the residential ‘Nauta Hogar’ service is now available in parts of all of the country’s municipalities. She added that this year ETECSA plans to roll out fixed broadband connections to a further 52,000 homes across the island, as well as create 150 new fixed and mobile public navigation areas and extend mobile internet access – currently restricted to state companies – to all mobile phone users.
