DTAC in talks with CAT over long-term infrastructure lease

Total Access Communication (DTAC) has been in talks with its concession owner CAT Telecom to lease its telecoms infrastructure on a long-term basis, The Bangkok Post writes. The move is part of the company’s strategy to establish a network infrastructure leasing partnership with the state agency after its build-transfer-operate (BTO) contract with CAT ends in September 2018. According to DTAC’s chief corporate affairs and business development officer, Rajiv Bawa, the talks between the two sides are expected to be concluded soon. TeleGeography notes that DTAC operates under a dual-spectrum (850MHz and 1800MHz) concession subleased from CAT, though the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) is planning to auction the frequencies in late 2018 (after the expiration of the BTO contract in September). DTAC could potentially be given an extension to its authorisation to ensure that customers of the two spectra could migrate to other networks.

Meanwhile, Rajiv Bawa also revealed that DTAC is waiting for the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) to finish examining its May 2017 partnership contract with TOT to deploy 4G services using TOT’s 2300MHz spectrum. The executive said: ‘We’re working hard to make sure that we’re ready for the end of the concession. We’re also working hard to make sure we’ll secure the 2.3GHz contract. The important thing is that we want to ensure that our customers will continue to get DTAC services uninterrupted.’
