Mike Rumbles, MSP for North-east Scotland and Scottish Liberal Democrat spokesperson for rural affairs and connectivity, welcomed Ofcom’s plans to work with operators to extend 4G coverage in rural areas of the UK.
The announcement comes after Ofcom’s successful mobile voice services obligation, where the UK’s four largest Mobile Network Operators agreed to provide voice coverage to 90% of the UK landmass by the end of 2017.
Mr Rumbles said: “We will need to see the details of the service obligation, in full, but this move by Ofcom should be broadly welcomed by customers and businesses alike.
“Rural communities in Scotland, like those Aberdeenshire and Angus, are often at the back of the queue for new innovations in connectivity and telecommunications technology.
“I’m pleased that Ofcom have announced these plans today but I am also cautious that anything less than a 100% 4G obligation could leave many communities without access.”
