4.77 million premises gained access to superfast broadband by end-2017

Fresh data related to the number of premises where superfast broadband services have been made available as a result of Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK)-supported projects has been published by the UK’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

According to the government ministry, a total of 4.77 million homes and businesses had gained access to a superfast connection – defined as downlink rates of at least 24Mbps – by the end of 2017 via BDUK-backed schemes. Meanwhile, the DCMS said that net grants to local authorities and budget transfers to devolved administrations reached a cumulative total of GBP595.47 billion (USD829 billion) in cash terms as at the end of 2017. DCMS notes that this figure equates to 8,014 premises covered per GBP1 million of broadband delivery programme expenditure.
